Four Egyptian banks appear in the Top 10 ranking, while Morocco and Algeria each claim three spots

First Bank’s latest ranking of the top 10 “local brands” in the banking sector across North African markets highlighted Egypt’s strong presence, as four Egyptian banks secured positions in the list. Morocco and Algeria followed closely, each represented by three major banks.

The ranking evaluates all local banking brands operating in North African markets-including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya-based on their total assets in USD, enabling standardized comparison across countries.

In terms of ranking, the National Bank of Egypt «NBE» claimed the top position in North Africa and among Egyptian banks, with total assets reaching USD 159.91 billion by end-2024.

Attijariwafa Bank Group came in second in North Africa and first among Moroccan banks, recording USD 71.68 billion in total assets by the end of 2024.

Banque Misr ranked third in North Africa and second among Egyptian banks, with total assets of USD 70.95 billion.

Banque Populaire Centrale «Morocco» secured the fourth spot in North Africa and second in Morocco, with USD 53.63 billion in assets.

Banque Nationale d’Algérie «BNA» ranked fifth in North Africa and first in Algeria, posting USD 48.67 billion in total assets.

Bank of Africa came sixth in North Africa and third in Morocco, with assets exceeding USD 41 billion.

Banque Extérieure d’Algérie «BEA» ranked seventh in North Africa and second among Algerian banks, with total assets of USD 32.54 billion.

Crédit Populaire d’Algérie came eighth regionally and third in Algeria, with USD 24.28 billion in total assets.

Commercial International Bank – Egypt «CIB» took the ninth position in North Africa and third among Egyptian banks, with total assets amounting to USD 23.76 billion.

Finally, the Arab African International Bank «AAIB» ranked tenth in North Africa and fourth among Egyptian banks, recording USD 18.15 billion in total assets by end-2024.
