ABK-Egypt, alBaraka Bank and Crédit Agricole Egypt record lowest exposure to exchange rate risks in June 2026
First Bank’s ranking of the banks with the lowest exposure to foreign exchange fluctuations in the Egyptian banking market as of June 2026 revealed that Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (ABK-Egypt) topped the list, with an FX risk exposure ratio of 0.00006, supported by foreign currency assets of USD 668.79 mn, compared to foreign currency liabilities of USD 668.83 mn at the end of June 2026.
alBaraka Bank Egypt ranked second, recording an FX risk exposure ratio of 0.0002, as its foreign currency assets reached USD 727.54 mn, compared to foreign currency liabilities of USD 727.39 mn at the end of June 2026.
Crédit Agricole Egypt came in third place, with an FX risk exposure ratio of 0.0022, as its foreign currency assets stood at USD 1.08 bn, compared to foreign currency liabilities of USD 1.09 bn at the end of June 2026.
Meanwhile, First Bank’s Ratings Center launched a specialized index to measure banks’ exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks, aiming to provide an accurate quantitative assessment of the balance of banks’ foreign currency positions.
The index methodology is based on measuring the degree of balance between a bank’s foreign currency assets and liabilities through the ratio of total foreign currency assets to total foreign currency liabilities.
A ratio approaching one reflects a relative balance between the two sides, indicating a neutral foreign currency position and a lower level of exposure to foreign exchange market risks.
Conversely, a ratio deviating from one, whether upwards or downwards, reflects a gap in the structure of foreign currency assets and liabilities. Ratios above one indicate that foreign currency assets exceed liabilities, potentially exposing the bank to risks arising from a decline in exchange rates. Meanwhile, ratios below one indicate that foreign currency liabilities exceed assets, increasing exposure to risks arising from a rise in exchange rates.
Accordingly, a ratio close to one represents the optimal position from a foreign exchange risk management perspective, reflecting greater efficiency in matching the structure of assets and liabilities and reducing market risk exposure.
The ranking further showed that 7 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector maintained their positions among the 10 banks with the lowest exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks at the end of June 2026 compared to the end of 2025. These banks are Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait Egypt (ABK-Egypt), alBaraka Bank Egypt, NBK Egypt, Export Development Bank of Egypt (EBank), Emirates NBD Egypt, Banque du Caire (BDC), and The United Bank.
The ranking revealed that 6 foreign banks featured among the top 10 banks, out of 11 foreign banks included in the ranking. These banks are Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (ABK-Egypt), alBaraka Bank Egypt, Crédit Agricole Egypt, National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (NBK Egypt), Emirates NBD Egypt, and Bank ABC Egypt.
