Competition among the 10 largest banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector by customer loans witnessed notable changes during H1 2026.

While the top five banks maintained their positions, the rankings of the next five witnessed notable shifts, resulting in four banks changing places within just six months.

This divergence highlights the varying degrees of stability across the top 10, as the largest banking institutions maintained their positions, while differences in loan portfolio growth rates played a key role in reshaping the rankings of several banks.

Top five banks maintain lead in customer loans

The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) retained its first-place position among banks operating in Egypt by customer loans as of June 2026, followed by Banque Misr in second place, Commercial International Bank (CIB) in third, QNB Egypt in fourth, and Arab African International Bank (AAIB) in fifth.

The rankings of these banks remained unchanged compared to the end of 2025, despite differences in the growth recorded in their loan portfolios during the first six months of the year.

AAIB stood out within this group, strengthening its fifth-place position after increasing its customer loans by EGP46.82bn, bringing its portfolio to EGP287.50bn at the end of June 2026.

Next five banks see shifts in rankings

In contrast to the stability of the top five banks, positions six to 10 witnessed notable changes. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt (ADIB Egypt) advanced to seventh place, up from eighth at the end of 2025, as its financing portfolio increased to EGP198.23bn, marking an increase of EGP43.36bn.

Meanwhile, First Abu Dhabi Bank Misr (FABMISR) ranked eighth, with a portfolio of EGP167.10bn at the end of June 2026.

Changes also extended to the ninth and tenth positions, as National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (NBK Egypt) advanced to ninth place, supported by an increase of approximately EGP25.92bn in its loans, bringing its portfolio to EGP148.52bn. Suez Canal Bank ranked tenth, with a portfolio of EGP140.74bn.

Meanwhile, Banque du Caire maintained its sixth-place position among the largest banks operating in Egypt, as its portfolio increased to EGP253.12bn at the end of June 2026.

The combined loans and financing portfolios of the five banks ranked sixth to tenth reached approximately EGP907.71bn at the end of June 2026, compared to EGP834.74bn at the end of 2025, marking an increase of around EGP72.97bn.

What do the shifts among the top 10 banks reveal?

The comparison highlights notable differences within the ranking of the 10 largest banks operating in Egypt by customer loans. While the five leading institutions maintained their positions, the remaining five witnessed changes in rankings, with ADIB Egypt and FABMISR exchanging seventh and eighth places, while NBK Egypt and Suez Canal Bank exchanged ninth and tenth places. Banque du Caire maintained its sixth-place position.

These shifts underscore that maintaining competitive positions depends on both the size of loan portfolios and their growth rates, as banks expanding their lending activities at a faster pace can improve their rankings against competitors over relatively short periods.
