Faisal Islamic, ALEXBANK and Banque Misr lead in retail deposit concentration
Faisal Islamic tops the ranking of banks with the highest retail deposit concentration
Retail deposits account for 59.54 % of total customer deposits across 28 banks at end-June 2026
Retail deposits dominate the deposit structures of Egypt’s three largest state-owned banks
The list, compiled by First Bank, revealed that Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt ranked first among the banks operating in Egypt in terms of retail deposit concentration at end-June 2026, with a concentration ratio of 96.54 per cent. retail deposits reached EGP 203.51 bn, out of total customer deposits of EGP 210.81 bn, bringing their contribution close to the bank’s entire deposit portfolio. This makes movements in retail savings a key factor influencing the development of its deposit base.
ALEXBANK ranked second, with a retail deposit concentration ratio of 79.87 per cent at end-June 2026. Retail deposits reached EGP 170.07 bn, compared to total customer deposits of EGP 212.93 bn.
Banque Misr came third, recording a concentration ratio of 70.67 per cent at end-June 2026. retail deposits stood at approximately EGP 2.13 tn, out of total customer deposits of EGP 3.02 tn.
The list, which covered 28 banks, showed that retail deposits accounted for more than half of total customer deposits at 12 banks, while corporates represented the larger share of deposits at the remaining 16 banks, reflecting the diversity of deposit structures across the banking sector.
The ranking also revealed that the three largest state-owned banks featured among the top 10 banks with the highest retail deposit concentration. Banque Misr ranked third, while the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) came fifth and Banque du Caire ranked seventh. The combined share of retail deposits in total customer deposits across the three banks reached approximately 69.02 per cent at end-June 2026.
Among Islamic banks, the list revealed considerable differences in deposit structures. While Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt topped the ranking and alBaraka Bank Egypt came fourth, retail deposits accounted for 44.48 per cent of total deposits at ADIB Egypt and 32.18 per cent at Kuwait Finance House Bank Egypt, reflecting the differences in deposit structures among Islamic banks.
Meanwhile, the ranking revealed similarities in deposit structures among UAE- and Kuwaiti-owned banks operating in Egypt, with retail deposits accounting for average shares of approximately 35.84 per cent and 39.16 per cent of total deposits, respectively, at end-June 2026.
Total retail deposits across the 28 banks reached EGP 9.79 tn, out of total customer deposits of EGP 16.45 tn, bringing their average contribution to approximately 59.54 per cent at end-June 2026.
These results indicate that retail customers represent the largest source of deposits across the banks covered collectively, despite the higher number of banks where corporates account for the larger share. This is explained by the substantial weight of retail deposit portfolios at major banks, particularly the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr.
Retail deposits are particularly important as a key source of funding for banking activities. They generally tend to be more stable than corporate deposits, owing to their distribution across a broad customer base. This relative stability helps banks plan the deployment of their resources and expand their lending activities.
It is worth noting that all figures in the above analysis are based on the standalone financial statements published by each bank for the period ended June 2026.
