Role of Digital Transformation to reduce Climate Change
Mai El-Kafoury
Digital transformation has come to play a pivotal role in the world's most important issue, the climate crisis, and coronavirus pandemic has driven the world in this direction.
It means to replace traditional ways of performing and facilitating the work of companies and States into more effective ways based on digitization and the use of technology
Digital transformation contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, in a reasonable proportion in sectors such as construction, heavy industry and the agricultural field, and also provides financial services to individuals at home, to reduce the use of traditional transportation, overcrowding and thus low carbon emissions.
It employs modern technologies, such as artificial intelligence to reduce climate change, by analyzing data, predicting anticipated risks and taking proactive steps to reduce them, as well as various technologies such as the development of 3D printing technology, dispensing with environmentally unsustainable things, such as the children's toys industry
More environmentally sustainable products can also be created, through concerted efforts between government and private sectors, Combining technology partnership with government, by giving the State financial support to those sectors to inject environmentally friendly products with affordable prices, Especially with many of these sectors and embracing the ideas of turning to green technology and periodically strive for research and development to find non-traditional ways to reduce electronics consumption and reduce carbon emissions.
From this point of view, civil society institutions and the media must raise citizen awareness of the vision and use of the most sustainable products, through introducing various programmes, spreading educational culture and introducing it into the educational system, to create a new generation capable of understanding environmental sustainability.
Despite the significant digital transformation role that it plays in reducing climate change, it can be argued that there are some challenges that still need time for a complete transformation, one of which is: big data centres and large computers, which need servers to supply them with energy on a continuous basis since the availability of clean energy is difficult, especially with its high cost.
