Mohammad Nejatullah Siddiqi, born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1931, studied at Aligarh Muslim University until his doctorate in economics in 1966.
Siddiqi was appointed Associate Professor of economics and Professor of Islamic studies at the same university, and then Professor of Economics at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and in the Center for Research in Islamic Economics. in Jeddah.
Mohammad Siddiqi later became a Fellow at the Center for Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and after that a visiting scholar at the Islamic Research & Training Institute, Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah.
He supervised a number of Ph.D. theses in the universities in India, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, and wrote most of his important books on Islamic banking in English
Siddiqi was chosen International Association for Islamic Economics and was also a Chairman or member of editorial bodies of a number of journals specializing in Islamic Studies, and was an advisory Board in Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank.
Siddiqi was awarded King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies in 1982 and received Shah Waliullah Award in New Delhi for contributions to Islamic Economics in 2003.
Siddiqi wrote highly significant books, most notably "Theory of Property in Islam", "Muslim Economic Thinking", "Insurance in an Islamic Economy", many of which have been translated into Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Indonesian, Malaysian and others.
Mohammad Nejatullah Siddiqui left our world at the age of 91, after making influential work in the fields of science and Islamic economy.
