HSBC, ABK-Egypt, and FABMISR top best private sector banks in achieving ROE in last 3 years

First Bank's list of the best private sector banks in terms of return on average equity over the past 3 years revealed that HSBC – Egypt «HSBC» topped the list, after achieving an average rate of return on average equity of 42.39% over the past 3 years, as its average rate of return on average equity reached 51.41% in 2024, compared to 46.85% in 2023, and 28.92% in 2022.
The «First Bank» list monitored the return on average equity of 21 private banks operating in the Egyptian banking system for which financial statements were available for the last 3 years, based on the independent financial statements announced for each bank for the years 2024, 2023 and 2022.
The list showed that all the banks under analysis achieved positive rates of return on average equity, as they all succeeded in achieving net profits at varying levels and none of them achieved losses during the years 2024, 2023 and 2022.
The rate of return on average equity demonstrates the ability of banks to invest owners' rights to achieve appropriate levels of profits during the period under analysis, and the higher the return, the more this indicates the efficiency of banks in investing their shares to achieve appropriate profit levels.
Returning to the list, the National Bank of Kuwait-Egypt «ABK-Egypt» snatched second place with an average rate of return on average equity of 39.68% in the last 3 years, achieving a return on average equity of 52.56% during 2024, compared to 35.93% during 2023, and 30.55% during 2022.
First Abu Dhabi Bank - Egypt «FABMISR» came third, after its average rate of return on average equity reached 39.08% in the last 3 years, achieving a return on average equity of 55.93% in 2024, compared to 36.65% in 2023, and 24.66% in 2022.
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank - Egypt «ADIB-Egypt» took fourth place, as its average rate of return on average equity reached 38.88%, after its average rate of return on average equity reached 48.63% in 2024, 39.82% in 2023, and 28.18% in 2022.
Credit Agricole Bank-Egypt dominated fifth place, with an average return on average equity of 37.57% over the past three years, thanks to achieving an average return on equity of 44.58% in 2024, compared to 42.12% in 2023 and 26.02% in 2022.
Suez Canal Bank ranked sixth, with an average return on average equity of 35.95% in the last 3 years, as its average return on average equity reached 52.40% in 2024, compared to 34.45% in 2023, and 21.01% in 2022.
The Commercial International Bank-Egypt «CIB» came seventh, as the average rate of return on average equity reached 35.28% in the last 3 years, after the rate of return on average equity reached 45.81% during 2024, compared to 36.41% during 2023, and 23.61% during 2022.
Alexandria Bank came in eighth place, with an average return on average equity of 30.60% in the last 3 years, as its average return on average equity reached 43.09% in 2024, compared to 28.84% in 2023, and 19.88% in 2022.
The National Bank of Kuwait-Egypt «NBK-Egypt» came in ninth place, after its average rate of return on average equity reached 28.96% in the last 3 years, as its average equity return reached 39.22% in 2024, compared to 30.73% in 2023, and 16.93% in 2022.
As for tenth place, it went to Emirates NBD-Egypt with an average rate of return on average equity of 27.68% in the last 3 years, thanks to achieving a rate of return on average equity of 36.61% during 2024, compared to 32.17% during 2023, and 14.27% during 2022.
It is worth noting that private sector banks are banks whose total contribution percentage exceeds 50%, according to data from the Egyptian Ministry of Public Business Sector.
