«First Bank» Releases a New Ranking of the Top 30 Local Banking Brands in North Africa

National Bank of Egypt tops the list of the largest banks in North Africa with total assets of USD 159.91 billion, while Attijariwafa Bank secures second place with assets amounting to USD 71.68 billion.
Banque Misr ranks third across North Africa with assets exceeding USD 70 billion, followed by Banque Populaire Centrale and Banque Nationale d’Algérie, which captured fourth and fifth places with assets totaling USD 53.63 billion and USD 48.67 billion, respectively.
A total of 11 Egyptian banks appeared in the list of the Top 30 banks in North Africa, while 8 Moroccan banks made it to the ranking.
Tunisia secured four positions, closely followed by Algeria with four banks, while Libya appeared with only two banks.
The First Bank ranking of the Top 30 Local Banking Brands in North Africa revealed the strong presence of Egyptian and Moroccan banks in the region. Egypt dominated with 11 entries, while Morocco followed with 8 banks on the list. Tunisia claimed five, Algeria four, and Libya two.
The ranking is based on the total assets in U.S. dollars of all local banking brands operating across North African markets (including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya), providing a unified comparison among the region’s banks.
At the top of the list, the National Bank of Egypt ranked first both regionally and domestically, with total assets amounting to USD 159.91 billion as of end-2024.
Attijariwafa Bank came in second regionally and first among Moroccan banks, with assets reaching USD 71.68 billion by the end of 2024.
Banque Misr secured the third position in North Africa and second among Egyptian banks, with total assets of USD 70.95 billion at the end of 2024.
Banque Populaire Centrale ranked fourth regionally and second among Moroccan banks, with assets totaling USD 53.63 billion.
In fifth place came the Banque Nationale d’Algérie, leading Algerian banks with assets of USD 48.67 billion.
Bank of Africa ranked sixth in North Africa and third among Moroccan banks, with assets surpassing USD 41 billion.
The Banque Extérieure d’Algérie came seventh regionally and second in Algeria, with total assets of USD 32.54 billion.
Crédit Populaire d’Algérie ranked eighth regionally and third in Algeria, with total assets of USD 24.28 billion.
Commercial International Bank (CIB) of Egypt came ninth in North Africa and third among Egyptian banks, with assets of USD 23.76 billion.
Finally, the Arab African International Bank (AAIB) ranked tenth in North Africa and fourth among Egyptian banks, with total assets of USD 18.15 billion as of end-2024.
