The First Bank ranking of the most efficient banks by return on average assets during the first nine months of 2025 revealed that Housing and Development Bank led the list with a ROAA of 9.21%, supported by net profits of EGP 13.44 bn during the first nine months of 2025.

Banque d’Alexandrie ranked second with a ROAA of 6.77%, driven by net profits of EGP 11.18 bn over the same period.

Third place went to HSBC, recording a ROAA of 6.49%, backed by net profits of EGP 14.41 bn during the first nine months of 2025.

The ranking, which covered 27 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector, showed that all banks achieved positive ROAA levels, reflecting their ability to generate net profits at varying levels, with no bank reporting losses during the first nine months of 2025.

Return on average assets measures how efficiently banks utilize their assets to generate net profits during the period under review. The higher the ROAA, the greater the bank’s efficiency in deploying its assets to achieve sustainable profitability.

Data highlighted the clear dominance of private-sector banks at the top of the ranking, as they captured 9 out of the top 10 positions, represented by: Banque d’Alexandrie, HSBC, Commercial International Bank «CIB», Crédit Agricole Egypt, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt «ADIB-Egypt», BANK NXT, FABMISR, National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt «NBK-Egypt», and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank – Egypt «ADCB».

Regarding public-sector banks, they secured only one seat among the top 10 most efficient banks by ROAA, with Housing and Development Bank claiming the top position overall.

Islamic banks also captured a single spot within the top 10, as ADIB-Egypt ranked sixth, posting a ROAA of 4.20% after generating net profits of EGP 9.18 bn during the first nine months of 2025.

At the level of foreign banking groups operating in Egypt, they dominated 7 positions among the top 10 most efficient banks, including: Banque d’Alexandrie, HSBC, Crédit Agricole Egypt, ADIB-Egypt, FABMISR, NBK-Egypt, and ADCB.

As for banks listed on the Egyptian Exchange «EGX», they occupied 4 positions within the top 10, namely: Housing and Development Bank, Commercial International Bank, Crédit Agricole Egypt, and ADIB-Egypt.

It is worth noting that all figures and growth rates cited above are based on the standalone financial statements officially disclosed by each bank as of end-September 2025.
