«HSBC» Tops the Ranking with the Highest Return on Average Equity, Reflecting Its Ability to Generate Strong Returns for Shareholders

Only the top five banks outperformed the banking sector's average Return on Average Equity of 28.8% over the past 5 years
First Bank's ranking of the Return on Average Equity of foreign banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector over the past 5 years revealed «HSBC» as the top performer, posting a five-year average ROAE of 37.25%. The bank recorded a ROAE of 38.38% in 2025, 51.41% in 2024, 46.85% in 2023, 28.92% in 2022 and 20.69% in 2021.
«ADIB-Egypt» ranked second with a five-year average ROAE of 36.80%. The bank posted a ROAE of 43.64% in 2025, 48.63% in 2024, 39.82% in 2023, 28.18% in 2022, and 23.75% in 2021.
«ABK-Egypt» secured third place with a five-year average ROAE of 32.74%, supported by a ROAE of 25.89% in 2025, 52.56% in 2024, 35.93% in 2023, 30.55% in 2022, and 18.77% in 2021.
The First Bank ranking tracked the Return on Average Equity of 12 foreign banks operating in Egypt for which financial statements were available over the past 5 years, covering 2021 through 2025.
ROAE measures how efficiently banks utilize shareholders' equity to generate net profits. The higher the ratio, the more effective a bank is at creating value for shareholders and delivering stronger profitability.

The ranking also showed that only the top five banks outperformed the Egyptian banking sector's average ROAE of 28.8% over the past 5 years, highlighting their superior ability to generate higher returns for shareholders through the efficient utilization of equity.
