The «First Bank» ranking of the banks with the lowest exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks in the Egyptian market revealed that «NBK - Egypt» topped the list, with its foreign exchange risk exposure ratio reaching 0.99985, supported by its ownership of foreign currency assets worth $1.34 billion, compared to foreign currency liabilities of $1.34 billion as of the end of March 2026.

«Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait - Egypt» came in second place, with a foreign exchange risk exposure ratio of 0.00045, as its foreign currency assets reached approximately $644.07 million, compared to foreign currency liabilities of $643.78 million as of the end of March 2026.

«Al Baraka Bank» ranked third, after its foreign exchange risk exposure ratio reached 0.0006, with foreign currency assets amounting to approximately $731.74 million, compared to foreign currency liabilities of $643.78 million as of the end of March 2026.

The «First Bank» Ratings Center launched a specialized index to measure banks’ exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks, as part of an effort to provide an accurate quantitative assessment of the balance of foreign currency positions within banks.

The methodology of this index is based on measuring the degree of balance between banks’ foreign currency assets and liabilities through the ratio of total foreign currency assets to total foreign currency liabilities.

A ratio approaching one indicates a relative balance between the two sides, reflecting a neutral foreign currency position and a lower level of exposure to foreign exchange market risks.

On the other hand, a ratio deviating from one, either upward or downward, reflects a gap in the structure of foreign currency assets; values above one indicate that foreign assets exceed liabilities, which may expose the bank to risks arising from a decline in exchange rates, while values below one indicate that foreign liabilities exceed assets, increasing exposure to risks arising from exchange rate increases.

Accordingly, approaching or reaching one is considered the optimal position from a foreign currency risk management perspective, as it reflects higher efficiency in matching the structure of assets and liabilities and reducing exposure to market risks.

The ranking showed that 7 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector succeeded in maintaining their presence among the top 10 banks with the lowest exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks as of the end of March 2026 and during 2025. These banks are: «NBK - Egypt», «Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait - Egypt», «Al Baraka Bank», «HSBC», «EBank», «BANK NXT», and «Emirates NBD».

The ranking also revealed the presence of 7 foreign banks among the top 10, out of the 14 foreign banks included in the ranking. These are: «NBK - Egypt», «Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait - Egypt», «Al Baraka Bank», «HSBC», «Crédit Agricole», «ABC», and «Emirates NBD».

Islamic banks secured one position among the top 10 banks with the lowest exposure to foreign exchange fluctuation risks as of the end of March 2026, with «Al Baraka Bank» ranking third.

It is worth noting that all figures and growth rates mentioned in the above analysis are based on the standalone financial statements disclosed by each bank as of the end of March 2026.
