Islamic Banks Absent from the Top Five Fastest-Growing Banks, Highlighting Their Relatively Limited Competitive Momentum Compared with Conventional Banks

The First Bank ranking of the fastest-growing Egyptian banks listed on the stock exchange in terms of retail deposits during the first half of 2026 revealed that Suez Canal Bank topped the list, as its retail deposit portfolio surged by approximately 61.51%, reaching 60.27 EGP bn at the end of June 2026, compared with 37.32 EGP bn at the end of 2025.

Export Development Bank of Egypt (EBank) ranked second, with its retail deposit portfolio increasing by 24.24% during H1 2026 to reach 26.59 EGP bn at the end of June, compared with 21.40 EGP bn at the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, Egyptian Gulf Bank ranked third, with its retail deposit portfolio rising by approximately 19.42% during the first six months of 2026, reaching 31.47 EGP bn at the end of June, compared with 26.35 EGP bn at the end of 2025.

The ranking, which covered all 12 banks listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange, showed that all banks recorded positive growth in their retail deposit portfolios during H1 2026.

The ranking also revealed significant changes in the positions of the top five banks, while Suez Canal Bank maintained its position as the fastest-growing listed Egyptian bank in terms of retail deposits during H1 2026.

The total retail deposit portfolio of all Egyptian banks listed on the stock exchange grew by approximately 13.53% during H1 2026, reaching 1.90 EGP tn at the end of June 2026, compared with 1.67 EGP tn at the end of 2025, an increase of more than 226.30 EGP bn in just 6 months.

The ranking also showed the complete absence of Islamic banks from the top five in terms of retail deposit growth during H1 2026. This reflects their relatively limited presence among the fastest-growing banks in this market, despite their sizable deposit bases. The ranking indicates that competition for retail deposits during the period was primarily driven by conventional banks, which achieved higher growth rates that enabled them to secure the leading positions.

The ranking also highlighted notable shifts among the leading banks, with Suez Canal Bank maintaining its position, while ADIB–Egypt, SAIB, Housing and Development Bank, and Al Baraka Bank declined in the rankings.

It should be noted that all figures and growth rates mentioned in the above analysis are based on the standalone financial statements publicly disclosed by each bank as of the end of June 2026.
