Faisal Islamic Bank, HDB lead EGX-listed banks by leverage ratio
Faisal Islamic Bank takes the lead, up from second place in the 2025 ranking
Top five banks retain their presence among the leaders at end-June 2026 and in 2025
Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt led First Bank’s ranking of the top Egyptian Exchange (EGX)-listed banks by leverage ratio at end-June 2026, moving up from second place in the 2025 ranking after recording a leverage ratio of around 14.30 per cent.
Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt was the only Islamic bank among the top five in the ranking, out of three Islamic banks included in the list, reflecting the strength of its capital position.
Housing and Development Bank (HDB) ranked second, with a leverage ratio of around 13.41 per cent at end-June 2026.
The United Bank ranked third, recording a leverage ratio of 12.14 per cent at end-June 2026.
The ranking included 11 banks listed on the EGX for which the necessary financial data were available.
The leverage ratio is calculated by dividing Tier 1 capital after deductions by total on- and off-balance-sheet exposures without applying risk weights. Banks are required to disclose the leverage ratio and the components of its numerator and denominator in their financial statements.
The ranking showed notable stability in the composition of the top five, with all five banks that led the 2025 ranking retaining their presence among the top five at end-June 2026, although their positions changed.
Faisal Islamic Bank moved into first place from second, while Housing and Development Bank (HBD) climbed to second from third in the 2025 ranking. The United Bank, meanwhile, slipped from first place to third.
CIB also moved up to fourth place from fifth, while QNB Egypt slipped to fifth from fourth at end-2025.
The data also showed that 10 of the 11 EGX-listed banks recorded leverage ratios at end-June 2026 above the banking sector average of 7.6 per cent at end-March 2026, the latest figure announced by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).
The fact that the vast majority of EGX-listed banks exceeded the Egyptian banking sector average recorded in March points to a likely increase in the sector’s overall average leverage ratio at end-June 2026 compared with end-March.
This is expected to be confirmed by the sector’s aggregate data, which the Central Bank of Egypt is scheduled to disclose this month.
All leverage ratios mentioned in the analysis above are based on the standalone financial statements published by each bank at end-June 2026.
