First Bank ranks Africa’s 30 largest banks by assets at end-June 2026
First Bank’s ranking of the 30 largest banks in Africa at end-June 2026 placed South Africa’s Standard Bank Group at the top, with total assets of approximately USD 232.27bn.
National Bank of Egypt (NBE) ranked second, with total assets of USD 197.98bn at end-June 2026.
South Africa’s FirstRand ranked third, with total assets of approximately USD 167.31bn, followed by Absa Group in fourth place with USD 139.23bn.
Nedbank Group, also based in South Africa, ranked fifth, with total assets of USD 98.21bn at end-June 2026.
Banque Misr secured sixth place, with total assets of approximately USD 94.98bn at end-June.
Morocco’s Attijariwafa bank ranked seventh, with assets of USD 87.94bn, followed by South Africa’s Investec Bank in eighth place with USD 84.66bn.
Morocco’s Banque Centrale Populaire secured ninth place, with total assets of USD 62.18bn at end-June 2026.
Bank of Africa in Morocco, completed the top 10, with total assets of USD 51.03bn at end-June 2026.
The geographical distribution highlights the strong presence of South African banks, which secured five of the top 10 positions, compared with three for Moroccan banks and two for Egyptian banks, underscoring the weight of South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt at the upper end of Africa’s banking sector.
The ranking also reveals a wide gap in asset size between the leading institutions and the rest of the top 10.
The largest bank held assets of more than four times those of the bank ranked 10th, highlighting the significant differences in scale among Africa’s leading banking institutions.
The ranking is based on banks’ reported total assets at end-June 2026, converted into US dollars to provide a consistent basis for comparison across institutions.
