The United Bank ranked second with a loan quality ratio of 99.09 per cent at end-June 2026, followed by Attijariwafa bank Egypt in third place at 98.98 per cent.
The ranking covered 25 banks operating in Egypt for which financial data were available during the period under review, based on their published standalone financial statements at end-June 2026.
The loan portfolio quality ratio measures the proportion of performing loans classified under Stages 1 and 2 relative to a bank’s total loan portfolio.
The indicator is a key measure of credit performance, reflecting the effectiveness of a bank’s credit risk assessment policies and asset management practices.
A higher ratio indicates that a greater proportion of the bank’s lending is extended to individuals and businesses with strong creditworthiness, contributing to financial soundness and reducing the risk of non-performing loans.
Conversely, a lower loan portfolio quality ratio may indicate weaknesses in credit assessment or challenges in loan recovery, potentially requiring a review of internal procedures and controls. Improving the ratio is therefore a strategic objective for banks seeking sustainable financial growth and stronger customer confidence.
The average loan portfolio quality ratio across Egypt’s banking sector reached approximately 98.2 per cent at end-June 2026, compared with 98.1 per cent at end-2025, with seven banks exceeding the average.
Eight banks retained their places among the top 10 compared with the previous ranking. Banque Misr entered the group in seventh place with a loan quality ratio of 98.34 per cent, while Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt (ADIB-Egypt) climbed from 12th at end-2025 to eighth at end-June 2026, recording a ratio of 97.93 per cent.
Arab African International Bank (AAIB) recorded the largest improvement in ranking position among the top 10, advancing from seventh to fourth as its loan portfolio quality ratio increased by 0.96 percentage points to 98.85 per cent. The United Bank also improved its position, climbing from fourth to second.
Outside the top 10, Alexbank advanced six places to 12th, supported by a 0.69 percentage-point improvement in its loan portfolio quality ratio.
By contrast, Crédit Agricole Egypt fell from first place at end-2025 to ninth at end-June 2026, after its loan portfolio quality ratio declined by 1.68 percentage points to 97.87 per cent.
