Competition among the top 10 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector by customer loans witnessed notable variations during H1 2026. While the top five positions remained unchanged, the following five banks experienced significant competitive shifts, resulting in changes to the rankings of four banks within just six months.

This divergence reflects varying degrees of stability across the top 10, as the largest banks maintained their positions, while differences in credit portfolio growth rates played a key role in reshaping the rankings of several banks.

Top five banks maintain their leading positions

National Bank of Egypt (NBE) retained its first place among the largest banks by customer loans as of June-end 2026, followed by Banque Misr in second place, Commercial International Bank (CIB) in third, QNB Egypt in fourth, and Arab African International Bank (AAIB) in fifth.

The rankings of these banks remained unchanged compared to December-end 2025, despite differences in the growth recorded by their loan portfolios during the first six months of the year.

AAIB stood out among this group, strengthening its fifth position after recording an increase of EGP46.82bn in customer loans, bringing its portfolio to EGP287.50bn by June-end 2026.

Next five banks witness ranking shifts

In contrast to the stability of the top five, positions from sixth to tenth witnessed notable changes. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt (ADIB Egypt) advanced to seventh place, compared to eighth at December-end 2025, after its financing portfolio increased to EGP198.23bn, marking a rise of EGP43.36bn.

Meanwhile, First Abu Dhabi Bank Misr (FABMISR) maintained its presence among the top 10 banks by loans, ranking eighth with a portfolio of EGP167.10bn by June-end 2026.

Changes also extended to the ninth and tenth positions, as National Bank of Kuwait –Egypt advanced to ninth place, supported by an increase of approximately EGP25.92bn in its loans, reaching EGP148.52bn. Suez Canal Bank ranked tenth, with a portfolio of EGP140.74bn.

On the other hand, Banque du Caire retained its sixth position among the largest lending banks in Egypt, after its portfolio increased to EGP253.12bn by June-end 2026.

The combined loans of the five banks ranking from sixth to tenth reached approximately EGP907.71bn by June-end 2026, compared to EGP834.74bn at December-end 2025, representing an increase of around EGP72.97bn.

What do the shifts in the top 10 rankings reveal?

The comparison highlights notable variations within the top 10 banks by loans. While the five leading banks maintained their respective positions, the following five witnessed two ranking exchanges: between ADIB Egypt and FABMISR, and between NBK Egypt and Suez Canal Bank, while Banque du Caire remained in sixth place.

These shifts highlight that maintaining competitive positions depends not only on the size of loan portfolios, but also on their growth rates, as banks recording faster expansion can improve their rankings against competitors within relatively short periods.
