What drove saib’s corporate loan growth? A look at portfolio shifts since 2016
saib’s corporate loan portfolio expanded significantly between end-2016 and end-June 2026, accompanied by changes in its composition as direct corporate loans gained a larger share and overdrafts narrowed the gap with syndicated loans, which retained the lead.
Corporate loans grew by 181.4 per cent over the period, reaching EGP 56.21bn at end-June 2026, from EGP 19.98bn at end-2016, an increase of EGP 36.23bn.
Corporate loans account for 57.4% of total loan growth
Corporate loans contributed approximately 57.4 per cent of the total increase in customer loans during the period, remaining a major driver of the bank’s lending expansion.
Nevertheless, their share of total customer loans declined to 64.38 per cent at end-June 2026, from 82.75 per cent at end-2016, a decrease of 18.37 percentage points.
This came as total customer loans grew by 261.6 per cent to EGP 87.30bn, from EGP 24.14bn over the same period.
The figures indicate that corporate lending continued to expand, although faster growth in other lending segments reduced its relative weight within the bank’s total loan portfolio, leaving it with a share of nearly two-thirds.
Direct corporate loans record largest gain in portfolio share
Direct corporate loans recorded the largest increase in their share of the corporate loan portfolio, rising to 23.45 per cent at end-June 2026, from 17.13 per cent at end-2016, a gain of 6.32 percentage points.
Their balance surged by 285.2 per cent to EGP 13.18bn, from EGP 3.42bn, an increase of EGP 9.76bn that accounted for approximately 26.93 per cent of total corporate loan growth.
With direct corporate loans growing faster than the overall corporate portfolio, their contribution to its composition increased significantly. They accounted for nearly a quarter of corporate loans at end-June 2026, compared with approximately one-sixth at the beginning of the period, representing the largest shift in relative shares among the portfolio’s components.
Overdrafts lead absolute growth and narrow gap with syndicated loans
Overdrafts recorded the largest absolute increase among the corporate loan portfolio’s components, adding approximately EGP 13.12bn and accounting for 36.21 per cent of total corporate loan growth during the period.
Their balance increased by 195.6 per cent to EGP 19.82bn at end-June 2026, from EGP 6.71bn at end-2016.
This lifted their share of the corporate loan portfolio to 35.27 per cent, from 33.57 per cent, an increase of 1.70 percentage points.
The expansion brought overdrafts closer to syndicated loans, which retained first place among the portfolio’s components. The gap between their respective shares narrowed to 2.70 percentage points, from 15.40 percentage points at the beginning of the period, reflecting the increasingly similar weights of the portfolio’s two largest components.
Syndicated loans retain lead with 37.97% share
Syndicated loans remained the largest component of saib’s corporate loan portfolio, with outstanding balances rising to EGP 21.34bn at end-June 2026, from EGP 9.78bn at end-2016, representing growth of 118.2 per cent.
Their balance increased by approximately EGP 11.56bn, contributing 31.91 per cent of total corporate loan growth and ranking second in absolute contribution, behind overdrafts.
However, syndicated loans grew more slowly than the portfolio’s other components, reducing their share to 37.97 per cent, from 48.98 per cent, a decline of approximately 11 percentage points.
As a result, the corporate loan portfolio shifted from a structure in which syndicated loans accounted for nearly half of total lending towards a more balanced distribution between syndicated loans and overdrafts, alongside a growing contribution from direct corporate loans.
Other loans gain ground from a small base
Other loans increased to EGP 1.86bn at end-June 2026, from EGP 64.96mn at end-2016, representing an increase of EGP 1.79bn and growth of 2,758.9 per cent from a relatively small base.
This expansion lifted their share of the corporate loan portfolio to 3.30 per cent, from 0.33 per cent, an increase of 2.98 percentage points.
Other loans contributed approximately 4.95 per cent of the total increase in corporate loans during the period.
Overall, the expansion of saib’s corporate loan portfolio was accompanied by a growing contribution from direct corporate loans, the largest absolute increase coming from overdrafts, and syndicated loans retaining their position as the portfolio’s largest component.
