25 African Banks Featured in the «First Bank» List of the Top 100 Banks by Deposits in the Middle East and North Africa

The «First Bank» ranking of the top 100 banks by customer deposits in the Middle East and North Africa as of September 2025 revealed that North African banks captured 25 positions within the list, with total deposits reaching 465.32 USD bn, representing nearly 13.5% of the total deposits of the banks Under analysis.

The ranking was based on banks’ total customer deposits as officially reported and denominated in USD, providing a unified benchmark for comparison across banking institutions. Banks without available official financial data were excluded to ensure accuracy and methodological reliability.

Egyptian banks recorded a strong presence, securing 11 positions with total deposits amounting to 243.38 USD bn. These included: «National Bank of Egypt», «Banque Misr», «Commercial International Bank (CIB)», «Arab African International Bank», «Banque du Caire», «Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt», «Suez Canal Bank», «Bank of Alexandria», «Housing & Development Bank», «saib», and «Export Development Bank of Egypt».

Moroccan banks ranked second among North African institutions, capturing 8 positions with combined deposits of 175.13 USD bn. These included: «Attijariwafa Bank», «Banque Centrale Populaire», «Bank of Africa», «Credit Agricole du Maroc», «Credit Immobilier et Hotelier», «Saham Bank», «Al Barid Bank», and «Bank Al-Maghrib».

In contrast, the Tunisian banking sector was represented by 4 banks, with total deposits reaching 18.98 USD bn. These included: «BIAT», «Banque Nationale Agricole», «STB», and «Amen Bank».

Meanwhile, Algeria was represented by only 2 banks, with total deposits amounting to 27.83 USD bn, surpassing Tunisian banks in deposit size despite having fewer institutions. These included: «Credit Populaire d’Algérie» and «Banque de Développement Local».

It is worth noting that the ranking covered parent banking groups across the MENA region, excluding their foreign subsidiaries.
