QNB, ADIB and HSBC Lead Foreign Banks in Strengthening Their Financial Position Over the Past 5 Years

QNB Egypt Strengthens Its Position as the Largest Foreign Bank by Assets, Widening the Gap with Its Closest Competitors
Total assets of 12 foreign banks reached 3.26 EGP tn, increasing by 2.25 EGP tn over the past 5 years
Gulf banks reinforced their leadership by securing 4 of the top five positions
EGX-listed banks captured two of the top five positions out of 4 listed banks included in the ranking
The First Bank Financial Position Enhancement Index, which tracks the foreign banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector that achieved the largest increase in assets over the past 5 years, ranked QNB Egypt first after its total assets surged to 915.56 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 285.48 EGP bn at the end of 2020, representing an increase of 630.08 EGP bn.
The First Bank Asset Enhancement Index measures the absolute increase in total assets across 12 foreign banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector for which financial statements were available, covering the period from end-2020 to end-2025.
The index showed that all banks included in the analysis recorded significant increases in their asset portfolios over the five-year period.
Returning to the ranking, ADIB Egypt came in second after its total assets increased by approximately 271.38 EGP bn over the past five years, reaching 344.15 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 72.77 EGP bn at the end of 2020.
HSBC Egypt ranked third, supported by an increase of 236.00 EGP bn in total assets over the same period, with its asset portfolio reaching 352.49 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 116.49 EGP bn at the end of 2020.
Among Gulf banking groups operating in Egypt, 4 banks secured places within the top 5 of the First Bank Asset Enhancement Index: QNB Egypt, ADIB Egypt, NBK Egypt and Emirates NBD Egypt.
Meanwhile, EGX-listed banks captured two of the top five positions, with ADIB Egypt ranking second and QNB Egypt also featuring among the leading listed banks.
Foreign banks recorded strong growth in total assets over the past 5 years, with combined assets reaching approximately 3.26 EGP tn at the end of 2025, compared with 1.01 EGP tn at the end of 2020, representing an increase of 2.25 EGP tn.
