QNB Egypt Expands Aggressively in Retail Lending, Reinforcing Its Leadership Among Foreign Banks

Gulf banks strengthened their leadership by securing the top five positions among the 8 Gulf banks included in the ranking

Retail loans at 12 foreign banks reached 331.47 EGP bn, increasing by 202.72 EGP bn over the past 5 years

Islamic banks captured two of the top five positions out of 3 Islamic banks included in the ranking

The First Bank Retail Lending Competitiveness Index, which measures the performance of foreign banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector over the past five years, ranked QNB Egypt first after its retail loan portfolio increased by 48.65 EGP bn, reaching 81.11 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 32.45 EGP bn at the end of 2020.

ADIB Egypt ranked second, with its retail loan portfolio expanding by 32.25 EGP bn over the past five years to reach 48.33 EGP bn at the end of 2025, up from 16.08 EGP bn at the end of 2020.

ABK Egypt secured third place after recording an increase of 18.58 EGP bn in retail loans over the same period, with its portfolio reaching 26.35 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 7.77 EGP bn at the end of 2020.

The First Bank Retail Lending Competitiveness Index tracks the absolute increase in retail loan portfolios across 12 foreign banks for which financial data were available. The findings showed that all banks included in the analysis succeeded in expanding their retail lending portfolios during the review period.

The index measures banks' ability to offer retail lending products and attract individual borrowers. It is based on the absolute increase in retail loans, reflecting each bank's success in expanding its retail lending portfolio.

The 12 foreign banks recorded strong growth in retail lending over the past 5 years, with total retail loans reaching approximately 331.47 EGP bn at the end of 2025, compared with 128.75 EGP bn at the end of 2020, representing an increase of 202.72 EGP bn during the period under review.

The ranking showed that the top five positions were occupied by QNB Egypt, ADIB Egypt, ABK Egypt, NBK Egypt, and Al Baraka Bank Egypt.

Islamic banks also secured two positions among the top five, with ADIB Egypt ranking second and Al Baraka Bank Egypt placing fifth.
