First Bank’s ranking of banks by return on average equity (ROAE) in H1 2026 placed Housing and Development Bank (HDB) at the top with a ratio of 50.55 per cent, reflecting its efficiency in deploying shareholders’ equity to generate net profit of EGP 9.92bn during the first half of the year.

ALEXBANK secured second place, recording a ROAE of 43.85 per cent, after posting net profits of EGP 7.54 bn in H1 2026.

HSBC ranked third, with a ROAE of 43.80 per cent, supported by its ability to generate net profits of EGP 12.36 bn in H1 2026.

The ranking, which covered 25 banks operating in the Egyptian banking market, showed that all banks recorded positive ROAE, as each generated net profits at varying levels, with none reporting losses in H1 2026.

ROAE measures a bank’s ability to generate profits from shareholders’ equity over a given period. A higher ratio generally indicates greater efficiency in using shareholders’ funds to generate returns.

The data also showed that eight banks retained their positions among the top 10 by ROAE in both H1 2025 and H1 2026: HDB, HSBC, ALEXBANK, ADIB, CIB, Suez Canal Bank, Crédit Agricole Egypt and EGBANK.

Meanwhile, two new banks entered the top 10. QNB advanced to ninth place, compared with 13th in H1 2025, while EBank climbed to 10th place, up from 18th in the H1 2025 ranking.

At the sector level, only 10 banks recorded a ROAE above the banking sector average of 28.32 per cent in H1 2026.

All figures and ratios mentioned in this analysis are based on the standalone financial statements published by each bank as of the end of June 2026.
