Mahmoud Mohieldin, Global Economist and First Egyptian Vice President of the World Bank

Dr. Mahmoud Safwat Mohieldin Professor of Finance Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, and the first Egyptian appointed to the postion of Managing Director of the World Bank, currently serving as the United Nations Special Envoy for the 2030 Funding Agenda.
Mohieldin was born in 1965 in Kafr Shukr, Al-Qalyubia governorate, and received a bachelor's degree in economics with honors from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University in 1986.
He travelled to the United Kingdom to complete his postgraduate studies. He received a diploma in development economics and quantitative analysis from the University of Warwick in 1989 and a master's degree in economic policy analysis from the University of York in 1990.
In addition, He received a doctorate in finance economics from the University of Warwick in 1995, where his thesis was entitled Financial Liberalization Policies in Developing Countries.
Meanwhile, Mohieldin held many international and local positions, most notably, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Director of the World Bank as the first Egyptian and Arab Minister of Investment in Egypt from 2004 to 2010.
He is currently the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and is the Climate Leader of the Egyptian Presidency at the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Climate Change Convention.
