Arab African Bank Leads Growth in Retail Deposits Over the Last 3 Years; Housing & Development Bank Ranks Second
A clear outperformance by the private sector, with 9 private banks among the top 10 fastest-growing banks, compared to only one public bank.
Arab banking groups strengthen their presence, capturing half of the top 10 positions in retail deposits growth.
National Bank of Egypt consolidates its leadership by recording the largest absolute increase in retail deposits over the last three years.
The First Bank ranking of the fastest-growing banks in retail deposits over the past three years revealed that Arab African International Bank (AAIB) topped the list, posting a growth rate of 69.6%. Its retail deposits portfolio reached approximately EGP 274.79 billion by end-2024, compared to EGP 56.37 billion at end-2021, underscoring the success of its expansion strategy and its ability to attract a broad customer base in recent years.
Housing & Development Bank (HDB) ranked second with a growth rate of 53.1% over the last three years, as its retail deposits rose to around EGP 80.47 billion by end-2024, up from EGP 22.43 billion at end-2021.
Arab International Banking Company (AIB) secured third place, recording a 35.9% growth rate over the three-year period. Its retail deposits portfolio amounted to approximately EGP 69.15 billion by end-2024, compared to EGP 27.56 billion at end-2021.
Data also highlighted the strong performance of the National Bank of Egypt (NBE), which recorded the largest absolute increase in retail deposits over the past three years, at around EGP 1.45 trillion, NBE’s retail deposits reached approximately EGP 3.30 trillion by end-2024, compared to EGP 1.85 trillion at end-2021, reflecting the strength of its customer base and its continued appeal as the largest mobilizer of household savings in the Egyptian market.
The ranking covered 26 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector with available financial data for the past three years. It is worth noting that ABC and FABMISR recorded growth rates of 61.5% and 19.9%, respectively, driven by acquisition activities; therefore, both banks were excluded from the ranking to ensure comparability.
The ranking demonstrated a notable outperformance of the private sector, with private banks occupying 9 out of the top 10 positions among the fastest-growing banks in retail deposits over the last three years, versus only one position held by public banks.
The private banks included in the top 10 fastest-growing banks in retail deposits during the period under review were: Arab African International Bank, AIB, CIB, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait–Egypt, ADCB, HSBC, Emirates NBD, Kuwait Finance House–Egypt, and Suez Canal Bank.
Among public banks, Housing & Development Bank led the segment, posting a 53.1% growth rate over the past three years.
As for Arab banking groups operating in the Egyptian market, they successfully captured half of the top 10 positions among the fastest-growing banks in retail deposits over the last three years, namely: Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait–Egypt, ADCB, AIB, Emirates NBD, and Kuwait Finance House–Egypt, while other banks were absent from the top ten rankings.
