HDB, CIB lead EGX-listed banks by ROAA in H1 2026
HDB retains the lead, reflecting its efficiency in deploying assets to generate net profit
Only three banks exceed the 4.07% average ROAA for EGX-listed banks in H1 2026
Top five ranking remains almost unchanged in H1 2026 from the same period of 2025
Housing and Development Bank (HDB) led First Bank’s ranking of the best Egyptian Exchange (EGX)-listed banks by asset utilisation efficiency, measured by Return on Average Assets (ROAA), in the first half of 2026, recording a rate of 8.16 per cent.
The bank’s performance was supported by net profit of EGP 9.92bn, reflecting its efficiency in deploying assets and generating strong returns.
The bank retained its lead after also topping the ranking in the corresponding period of 2025, underscoring the continued efficiency of its asset deployment and its ability to generate strong levels of profitability.
Commercial International Bank – Egypt (CIB) ranked second, with a Return on Average Assets of 5.03 per cent, after recording net profit of EGP 39.24bn in the first half of 2026.
Credit Agricole Egypt ranked third, with a Return on Average Assets of 4.74 per cent, supported by net profit of EGP 3.61bn in the first half of 2026.
These results highlight the top three banks’ stronger efficiency in deploying their assets, with each recording a Return on Average Assets above the 4.07 per cent average for EGX-listed banks in the first half of 2026.
This reflects their strong performance and ability to convert assets into net profit, while the remaining banks recorded rates below the average during the period under review.
The ranking included all 12 banks listed on the Egyptian Exchange, all of which recorded positive Return on Average Assets, reflecting their success in generating net profits at varying levels, with none reporting losses during the first half of 2026.
Return on Average Assets measures how efficiently banks deploy their assets to generate net profit during the period under review. The higher the return, the greater the bank’s efficiency in using its assets to generate appropriate levels of profit.
Meanwhile, the ranking of the top five EGX-listed banks by Return on Average Assets remained almost unchanged in the first half of 2026 compared with the corresponding period of 2025. Housing and Development Bank retained the lead, while ADIB-Egypt remained fourth and QNB Egypt fifth.
The changes were limited to an exchange of positions between some banks. CIB moved up from third place to second, while Credit Agricole Egypt slipped from second to third.
All values used to calculate Return on Average Assets are based on the standalone financial statements published by each bank at end-June 2026 and were annualised.
