Wide gap in liquidity ratios among EGX-listed banks
Crédit Agricole Egypt topped First Bank’s ranking of the best Egyptian Exchange (EGX)-listed banks by liquidity ratio at end-June 2026, recording a ratio of 34.55 per cent.
Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt ranked second with a liquidity ratio of 30.24 per cent, making it the highest-ranked Islamic bank among the three Islamic banks listed on the Egyptian Exchange.
Suez Canal Bank ranked third, recording a liquidity ratio of 27.69 per cent at end-June 2026.
First Bank’s ranking included all 12 banks listed on the EGX for which financial data were available at end-June 2026.
A bank’s liquidity ratio is defined as a measure that reflects its ability to meet short-term obligations without having to liquidate long-term assets or resort to borrowing.
The ranking revealed a clear disparity in liquidity levels among listed banks. Crédit Agricole Egypt, which topped the ranking, recorded a liquidity ratio of 34.55 per cent, compared with 10.97 per cent for Egyptian Gulf Bank (EGBANK), which ranked last, leaving a gap of 23.58 percentage points between the highest and lowest ratios.
A higher liquidity ratio does not necessarily correspond to a larger asset base. Crédit Agricole Egypt topped the ranking despite having a substantially smaller asset base than some of the largest listed banks, including Commercial International Bank (CIB) and QNB Egypt, which recorded liquidity ratios of 21.26 per cent and 18.85 per cent, respectively.
This reflects differences in how banks manage and deploy liquidity, shaped by variations in asset structures and the allocation of resources between balances held with the Central Bank of Egypt and other banks. These differences were directly reflected in liquidity ratios at end-June 2026.
All liquidity ratios cited in the analysis were calculated using the standalone financial statements disclosed by each bank at end-June 2026.
