NBE, Banque Misr lead First Bank’s Credit Competitiveness Index over 3 years
NBE tops First Bank’s Credit Competitiveness Index, accounting for nearly 55% of the banking sector’s loan growth over three years
Customer loans reach EGP 10.38tn, increasing by EGP 6.28tn between 2022 and 2025
Islamic banks secure just one place among the top 10, out of four included in the ranking
CIB leads private-sector banks by customer loans, supported by substantial portfolio growth over three years
National Bank of Egypt (NBE) topped First Bank’s Credit Competitiveness Index over the three years to end-2025, accounting for nearly 55 per cent of the increase in customer loans across Egypt’s banking sector.
NBE recorded the largest absolute increase in customer loans, adding approximately EGP 3.44tn to its portfolio over the period, out of the sector’s total increase of EGP 6.28tn.
Banque Misr ranked second, with its customer loan portfolio expanding by approximately EGP 832.64bn over three years, representing around 13.3 per cent of the sector’s total increase.
Commercial International Bank – Egypt (CIB) secured third place after adding EGP 322.77bn to its customer loan portfolio, bringing the total to EGP 541.41bn at end-2025, from EGP 218.63bn at end-2022.
The increase pushed CIB ahead of QNB Egypt, making it the largest private-sector bank in Egypt by customer loans.
First Bank’s Credit Competitiveness Index tracked changes in customer loan portfolios across 27 banks operating in Egypt, with all institutions included in the ranking recording growth over the three-year period.
The index measures banks’ ability to expand their lending activities across retail and corporate segments, ranking institutions by the absolute increase in their total customer loan portfolios during the period under review.
Across Egypt’s banking sector, customer loans reached EGP 10.38tn at end-2025, compared with EGP 4.09tn at end-2022, an increase of EGP 6.28tn over three years.
Islamic banks had limited representation among the leading institutions, with only one of the four included in the ranking securing a top-10 position.
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank , Egypt (ADIB-Egypt) ranked seventh, while Kuwait Finance House, Egypt (KFH-Egypt), Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt and Al Baraka Bank Egypt remained outside the top 10.
Foreign banks claimed four of the top 10 positions, out of 12 included in the ranking: QNB Egypt, ADIB-Egypt, National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (NBK-Egypt) and Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (ABK-Egypt).
