NBE, Banque Misr lead Retail Credit Competitiveness Index over 3 years
NBE dominates First Bank’s Retail Credit Competitiveness Index after adding more than EGP 200bn over three years
Retail loans across 26 banks reaches EGP 1.33tn, up EGP 658.59bn over three years
Islamic banks secure just one top-10 position among the four included in the ranking
National Bank of Egypt (NBE) topped First Bank’s Retail Credit Competitiveness Index over the past three years, supported by the largest absolute increase in retail loans among the banks included in the ranking.
NBE portfolio expanded by approximately EGP 210.89bn to around EGP 438bn at end-2025, from EGP 227.11bn at end-2022.
Banque Misr ranked second after adding approximately EGP 77.60bn to its retail loan portfolio over the three-year period, taking the total to EGP 172.76bn at end-2025, from EGP 95.15bn at end-2022.
Banque du Caire secured third place, with its retail loan portfolio increasing by EGP 48.07bn over the past three years to EGP 102.31bn at end-2025, from EGP 54.24bn at end-2022.
First Bank’s Retail Credit Competitiveness Index tracked changes in retail loan portfolios across 26 banks operating in Egypt, with all banks included in the ranking recording increases over the past three years.
The index measures banks’ ability to expand retail credit by increasing loans extended to individual customers. Banks are ranked according to the absolute increase in their total retail loan portfolios over the period under review.
The index showed substantial growth in retail loans across the 26 banks, with the combined portfolio reaching EGP 1.33tn at end-2025, compared with EGP 637.09bn at end-2022, an increase of EGP 658.59bn over three years.
Islamic banks secured just one place among the top 10 on First Bank’s Retail Credit Competitiveness Index, out of the four included in the ranking: Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Egypt (ADIB-Egypt), Kuwait Finance House – Egypt (KFH-Egypt), Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt and Al Baraka Bank Egypt.
ADIB-Egypt was the only Islamic bank among the top 10, ranking sixth.
Foreign banks secured four places among the top 10, out of the 11 included in the ranking: QNB Egypt, ADIB-Egypt, National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (NBK-Egypt) and Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (ABK-Egypt).
