The retail loan portfolio quality ratio expresses the proportion of good loans in Stages one and two out of the bank’s total retail loans.
It is considered one of the most important criteria for assessing credit performance, as it reflects how efficiently the bank applies its risk assessment and asset management policies.
A higher ratio indicates a greater proportion of lending to creditworthy individuals, strengthening the bank’s financial soundness and reducing the risk of non-performing loans.
Conversely, a low retail loan portfolio quality ratio points to weak assessment processes or problems in following up on loan recovery, which calls for a review of internal procedures and controls.
Accordingly, improving the ratio is considered a strategic goal for banks to ensure sustainable financial growth and strengthen customer confidence.
The average retail loan portfolio quality across the 23 banks stood at about 98.14 per cent, with 14 banks above the average. This is roughly 1.5 percentage points higher than the average quality of the corporate loan portfolio, which stood at 96.67 per cent.
Foreign banks secured 6 of the top ten places: Attijariwafa Bank Egypt, FABMISR, Emirates NBD, National Bank of Kuwait (NBK-Egypt), Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank-Egypt (ADIB Egypt), and Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (ABK-Egypt).
As for Islamic banks, they took two places in the top ten: Faisal Islamic Bank, which ranked first, andADIB, which ranked sixth.
