First Bank’s ranking of banks operating in Egypt by corporate loan portfolio quality at end-June 2026 revealed that National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt (NBK Egypt) topped the list, recording a quality ratio of 99.39 per cent.
The United Bank ranked second, with a corporate loan portfolio quality ratio of 99.20 per cent at end-June 2026. Attijariwafa bank Egypt came third, recording a ratio of 98.91 per cent at the end of June.
The ranking covered 23 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector for which financial data was available for the period under review, based on each bank’s published standalone financial statements as of end-June 2026.
The corporate loan portfolio quality ratio measures the share of performing corporate loans classified under Stage 1 and Stage 2 out of a bank’s total corporate loans. It is considered one of the key indicators for assessing credit performance, as it reflects a bank’s efficiency in applying credit risk assessment policies and managing its assets.
A higher ratio indicates that a larger proportion of a bank’s corporate loan portfolio falls within the first two stages of credit classification, reflecting portfolio quality and supporting financial soundness while limiting exposure to non-performing loans.
Conversely, a lower ratio may indicate weaknesses in credit assessment or challenges in monitoring loan repayments, requiring a review of internal procedures and controls. Accordingly, improving portfolio quality remains a strategic objective for banks seeking sustainable financial growth and stronger customer confidence.
The average corporate loan portfolio quality ratio across the 23 banks reached 96.67 per cent, with 12 banks exceeding the average. Meanwhile, the average retail loan portfolio quality ratio across the same banks stood at 98.14 per cent, indicating that corporate loans recorded a lower quality ratio than retail loans.
Foreign banks accounted for five of the top 10 positions: National Bank of Kuwait – Egypt, Attijariwafa bank Egypt, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt, Crédit Agricole Egypt and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt.
As for Islamic banks, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt (ADIB) was the only institution to secure a place among the top 10, ranking ninth.
It is worth noting that all figures mentioned in this analysis are based on the standalone financial statements published by each bank as of end-June 2026.
