Alex Bank, HSBC, and Crédit Agricole lead Egypt’s private banks in return on average assets during H1 2025

Alex Bank topped the list of private banks with the highest return on average assets, recording 6.58%, followed by HSBC-Egypt in second place with 6.56%.

Crédit Agricole-Egypt ranked third with 5.41%, while CIB and ADIB-Egypt claimed the fourth and fifth positions, with returns of 5.29% and 4.35%, respectively.

NBK-Egypt, ADCB, and FABMISR were also among the top 10 private banks, achieving rates of 4.11%, 4.05%, and 3.93%, respectively.

The First Bank list of the most efficient private banks in asset utilization (Return on Average Assets – ROAA) during the first half of 2025 revealed that Bank of Alexandria «Alex Bank» ranked first, with a return on average assets of 6.58%, attributed to achieving net profits of EGP 7.47 billion during H1 2025.

The list included 21 private banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector for which financial data was available during the analysis period. All banks achieved positive returns on average assets, reflecting their success in generating net profits at varying levels and the absence of any losses among the analyzed banks during the first half of 2025, according to each bank’s independently published financial statements.

It is worth noting that private banks are defined as those in which private ownership exceeds 50%, according to data from Egypt’s Ministry of Public Enterprise Sector.

The return on average assets (ROAA) measures a bank’s efficiency in utilizing its assets to generate net profits during the analyzed period. A higher return indicates stronger efficiency in employing assets to achieve higher profitability.

Returning to the ranking, HSBC-Egypt came in second, with a 6.56% return on average assets, driven by net profits of EGP 9.58 billion during H1 2025.

Crédit Agricole-Egypt ranked third, recording a 5.41% ROAA after achieving net profits of EGP 3.53 billion during the same period.

Commercial International Bank «CIB» secured the fourth position, with a 5.29% return on average assets, supported by net profits of EGP 33.41 billion during H1 2025.

Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank-Egypt «ADIB-Egypt» ranked fifth, posting a 4.35% ROAA and net profits of EGP 6.04 billion during the first half of 2025.

National Bank of Kuwait-Egypt «NBK-Egypt» came sixth, with a 4.11% return on average assets, after recording net profits of EGP 4.13 billion during H1 2025.

Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank «ADCB-Egypt» ranked seventh, with a 4.05% ROAA and net profits of EGP 2.95 billion during the same period.

First Abu Dhabi Bank-Egypt «FABMISR» followed in eighth place, achieving a 3.93% return on average assets, driven by net profits of EGP 8.59 billion during H1 2025.

Qatar National Bank-Egypt «QNB-Egypt» ranked ninth, posting a 3.60% ROAA and net profits of EGP 14.77 billion during the first half of the year.

Finally, Emirates NBD-Egypt completed the top ten, achieving a 3.44% return on average assets, supported by net profits of EGP 3.02 billion during H1 2025.
