AAIB Leads Asset Growth Over the Past Three Years, supported by the Expansion Strategy Implemented by Tamer Wahid and His Executive Team
Private-sector banks show strong dominance with 9 out of the top 10 fastest-growing banks, compared to only one public-sector bank.
Arab banking groups operating in Egypt continue their rapid expansion, securing half of the top positions among the fastest-growing banks.
NBE records the largest increase in total assets over the past three years, reinforcing its leadership in the Egyptian banking sector.
Only one Islamic bank appears among the top 10, while non-Arab foreign banks are entirely absent.
The Egyptian banking sector posted 141.1% asset growth over the last three years, with 10 banks outperforming the sector average.
According to the First Bank ranking of the fastest-growing banks in total assets over the past three years, the Arab African International Bank «AAIB» topped the list with an impressive 282% growth rate, driven by the expansion plan executed by Tamer Wahid, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director, along with his leadership team.
Suez Canal Bank came in second with 213.7%, followed by ADIB-Egypt in third place with 189.4% during the same period.
The ranking covered 26 banks operating in the Egyptian banking system for which financial statements were available for the past three years. Banks ABC and FABMISR were excluded despite recording exceptionally high growth rates of 486.8% and 370.9%, respectively, due to acquisition activities that would distort comparative accuracy.
The ranking highlighted the strong performance of private-sector banks, which secured 9 out of the top 10 positions, compared to just one spot for public-sector banks.
The private banks in the top 10 fastest-growing list were AAIB, Suez Canal Bank, ADIB-Egypt, Arab International Bank «AIB», Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank «ADCB», Attijariwafa Bank, National Bank of Kuwait «NBK», Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait «ABK», and «CIB». The sole public-sector representative was the National Bank of Egypt «NBE».
Among Islamic banks, ADIB-Egypt led the category with a 189.4% growth rate over the past three years, with total assets rising from EGP 89.45 billion in 2021 to EGP 258.84 billion by the end of 2024.
The data also revealed strong performance by Arab banking groups operating in Egypt, which captured half of the top 10 positions: ADIB-Egypt, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Attijariwafa Bank, NBK, and ABK, while other foreign banks fell outside the top tier.
According to the ranking, only 10 banks exceeded the sector’s average asset growth rate of 141.1%, while 16 banks grew below the average — indicating wide performance disparities and highlighting the ability of a select group of banks to deliver exceptional growth compared to most peers.
On another note, National Bank of Egypt «NBE» recorded the largest absolute increase in assets, with its balance sheet expanding by EGP 4.90 trillion, reaching EGP 8.14 trillion by the end of 2024, further cementing its leadership position in the Egyptian banking sector.
The slowest-growing bank in total assets over the past three years was United Bank, which recorded a modest 15.5% growth rate.
However, forecasts indicate a clear improvement in the bank’s performance going forward, supported by recent administrative restructuring — signs of which have already begun to appear. The bank ranked fifth in the First Bank list of the fastest-growing listed banks in total assets during the first nine months of 2025.
