The First Bank ranking of the fastest-growing banks in retail financing over the past three years revealed that Al Baraka Bank topped the list, with its retail financing portfolio growing by about 71.6% over the past three years, reaching EGP 12.53 billion by the end of 2024, compared with EGP 2.48 billion at the end of 2021.
The Export Development Bank of Egypt «EBank» ranked second, after its retail loans portfolio rose by about 50.5% over the past three years, reaching EGP 10.90 billion by the end of 2024, compared with EGP 3.20 billion at the end of 2021.
Suez Canal Bank came in third, following a 45.4% increase in its retail loans portfolio over the past three years, reaching EGP 5.49 billion by the end of 2024, up from EGP 1.79 billion at the end of 2021.
The ranking covered 26 banks operating in the Egyptian banking sector for which financial data were available over the past three years. Notably, ABC and FABMISR recorded growth rates of 28.9% and 21.2%, respectively, over the past three years due to acquisition transactions, and were therefore excluded from the ranking to ensure comparability.
The data revealed a clear outperformance by the private sector, with private banks capturing 8 positions among the top 10 fastest-growing banks in retail loans over the past three years, compared with two positions for public banks.
The private banks included in the top 10 were: Al Baraka, Suez Canal Bank, HSBC, BANK NXT, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt, Faisal Islamic Bank, saib, and ADIB.
As for public banks, they secured two spots in the top 10, EBank ranked second with a growth rate of 50.5%, while the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) ranked seventh with a growth rate of 30.8% over the past three years.
The National Bank of Egypt further reinforced its leadership position, recording the largest retail loans portfolio and the highest absolute increase over the past three years, amounting to approximately EGP 197.60 billion. Its retail loans portfolio rose to EGP 356.91 billion by the end of 2024, compared with EGP 159.31 billion at the end of 2021.
Arab banking groups strengthened their presence in the Egyptian market, capturing three seats among the top 10 fastest-growing banks in retail financing: Al Baraka, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt, and ADIB.
Regarding Islamic banks, they secured two positions among the top 10 fastest-growing banks. Al Baraka Bank topped the overall ranking with a growth rate of 71.6%, while Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank – Egypt (ADIB) ranked tenth with a growth rate of 28.5% over the past three years.
