«AAIB», «AIB», and «saib» Lead Banks with the Fastest Growth in Equity Over the Past Three Years
«AAIB» topped the list of banks with the fastest growth in equity over the past three years, followed by «AIB» in second place.
The private banking sector continued to strengthen its dominance, securing 7 positions among the top 10 fastest-growing banks in terms of equity, compared to just 3 seats for state-owned banks.
Foreign banks captured 3 spots within the top 10 fastest-growing banks, while Gulf-based banks secured two positions.
«NBE» maintained its leadership across the sector by recording the largest absolute increase in equity over the past three years.
According to the First Bank ranking of the fastest-growing banks in equity over the last three years, Arab African International Bank «AAIB» ranked first with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57.8%. Its equity portfolio rose to EGP 132.63 billion by the end of 2024, compared to EGP 33.75 billion at the end of 2021.
Arab Investment Bank «AIB» came in second with a growth rate of 52.9% over the same period, followed by Arab International Banking Company «saib» in third place with a growth rate of 52.8%.
The ranking covered 26 banks operating within the Egyptian banking sector for which financial data were available over the past three years. It is worth noting that «FABMISR» and «ABC-Egypt» recorded growth rates of 90.8% and 81.3%, respectively, driven by acquisition activities, and were therefore excluded from the ranking to ensure fair comparison.
The ranking confirmed the outperformance of private-sector banks, which dominated 7 out of the top 10 positions among the fastest-growing banks in equity over the past three years, compared to only 3 positions for public-sector banks.
The private banks included in the top 10 fastest-growing list were: Arab African International Bank, saib, AIB, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait – Egypt, Suez Canal Bank, and HSBC. The three public-sector banks were the National Bank of Egypt, EBank, and Housing and Development Bank.
At the level of Islamic banks, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank-Egypt «ADIB-Egypt» was the only Islamic bank to rank among the top 10 fastest-growing banks, recording a compound annual growth rate of 51.3%. Its equity portfolio rose to EGP 22.37 billion by the end of 2024, compared to EGP 6.46 billion at the end of 2021.
The data also showed solid performance by foreign banks operating in Egypt, which accounted for 30% of the fastest-growing banks in equity over the past three years, namely: Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank-Egypt, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait-Egypt, and HSBC.
On the other hand, the National Bank of Egypt recorded the largest absolute increase in equity during the period under review, with its equity portfolio rising by EGP 351.49 billion to reach EGP 533.66 billion by the end of 2024, compared to EGP 182.17 billion at the end of 2021.
Conversely, United Bank was the weakest performer in terms of equity growth over the past three years, recording a modest growth rate of just 14%.
Nevertheless, expectations point to a noticeable improvement in its performance during the coming period, supported by recent administrative restructuring, early signs of which have already emerged, as the bank ranked ninth on First Bank’s list of the fastest-growing listed banks on the Egyptian Exchange in terms of equity during the first nine months of 2025.
